Foreword

Just the title gives the flavour of this rewarding project. It has been a pleasure both from an intellectual and an institutional perspective to support and follow the life of the project.

Today it means even more than before, because of the enlargement of Europe that brings us closer in another way than before to the Baltic states. It means that the exchange and common learning have now an extended area for sharing. From this project we all have an excellent product or products in non-formal and formal adult learning, and this is a way to learn. The experiences of the project mean for all of us an important contribution to systems and practice in the field of adult learning.

Learning and sharing for a knowledge-based Europe support partnership, a trans-national cooperation and a common experience sharing. The Nordic Council of Ministers has contributed to this process by supporting the three-year project . For the near future, and of course also in a long term, we can learn from this project how to take into account different contexts, systems and cultures, to be open-minded and to overcome psychological barriers when we import products and learn from other people’s experiences.

The method of Learning and Sharing tells us a lot about how to learn from a common global market of learning and education. How to create pathways, highways and roads for exchange and cooperation, and how to remove barriers. For the participants in Learning for Sharing there are obvious potential experiences: to learn more about yourself, your institution, organisation and region or country awakens a significant, strong awareness about the need and necessity for both personal development and institutional change. Both call for an effort and a lot of struggle and investment in time and other resources. It takes a lot of energy to convince yourself and the surrounding world about the importance of listening and learning before speaking. To have the courage to dig deep and analyse your own situation and define the needs and express the necessity before looking at the big offer that is available around in Europe.
